Do you play?
Friday, August 19, 2005 (203 reads)

If you play a musical instrument, sing, or both, perhaps you have an original piece that you'd like to share here.  We're entertaining the feasibility of inviting independent musicians to showcase their talent by either having them as guest on our spaces here, or linking to selected works on their own servers.

A couple of modest efforts...
Saturday, August 20, 2005 (432 reads)

As a new student of guitar, I'll ask advance forgiveness for the quality of the following recording efforts, but I suppose I'll need to be the first to step up to the mic and inaugurate the Music Category.

Harmony... and all 'Scopers too...

I was going to wait a bit to give you this... but now that it's done, I cant.  So, I think I'll just give it to you now, as an early little - very little  - wedding present for you and Mr. Harmonica, and your daughter too.  I want to share it with everyone else in our family, though, because we can all be a part of your special time this way.

Connie: Away
Wednesday, March 08, 2006 (284 reads)

connie_promopic.jpgConnie, one of the HopeScope Family's "Canadian Contingent", is quite a talented songwriter and musician.  Proficient in guitar, piano, and a bit of violin, she is also a wonderful lyricist, and has been sharing her verse with us for some time.  Now, though, Connie has gone the limit and recorded "Away" for our enjoyment.

This ballad was written and performed, as well as recorded and engineered, by Connie.  She'll be getting some guidance from one of our experienced resident musicians to make her recordings even better, and we look forward to hearing more from her!

Preludio de Adios
Sunday, November 19, 2006 (1269 reads)

Okay... the house is quiet and I promised you I'd avail myself of the quiet.  So, I thought I'd share a bit of one of the pieces I'm studying.

This piece, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful compositions ever written. I really have no business learning it yet, as it is so diffucult for me that I am only working on the verse as yet - the chorus comes later - and I have had to record it for you in phrases because I can't yet get through it.

The piece is "Preludio de Adios", a slow, beautiful South American ballad or "lament" by Venezuealan composer Alfonso Montes. According to my research, Montes is a modern composer (he is my age!) and was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela in 1955. He studied music in Caracas and London, and his work is deeply based in Venezuelan tradition but influenced by his European environment, particularly England and Germany where he has lived for several years. His pieces have been widely recorded by some of the most noted guitarists in the world including John Williams.

Okay, guys... :)

I finally got this done, after having been fooling with it for over two years. I recorded it with Audacity - my first time using it - and I am no expert. But I normalized it and removed some room noise, so hopefully it will be okay for you.

Before I point you to the music, let me bore you with this piece's background. :grin

Sor's Estudio #6, Op.35

 Hi, all!

Well, I just thought that before I undertake the medley of material I'm working on, or try to record any more individual pieces, I'd share with you a little classical study that I have been working on for about two years.  Amazingly, it's only about two minutes long, but I find it so difficult to play from start to finish without error that I had to record it in phrases. It's also a difficult little piece to play expressively. To me, there seems to be a lot going on in this piece... challenging left hand stretches, barres, partial barres, traversing the full neck, and a busy right hand as well. After all this time, I'm still nowhere near there yet.

David Gates' "If"

 Hi, all...

I finally got around to getting another short taste of a piece recorded. As with most of the pieces I have been recording, it would normally be longer, but at this juncture it's very hard for me to get through an intro, verse, chorus, and closure with any listenable quality, and the pieces I'm working on are so technically challenging for me that I have to record them in phrases. So I always hold my breath and hope the net product is somewhat respectable, as they are always "works in progress".

Hi, all!

I have been meaning to do a little recording for you on the Seagull MJ, and as promised, I managed to do that today. Getting a listenable recording was characteristically challenging for me, but sadly, not as challenging as trying to remove the background noise; every time I tried to normalize the recording or remove the ambient noise, the guitar's voice was altered. That defeats the purpose of the instrument and the music.  I need to use it more and learn it.

Anyway, this piece has always been one of my favorites. I'm learning a version of it in which the meter of the second verse gets doubled to 8th notes and I still find it hard, so for this recording there's still a bit of that, but I took some creative liberties and improvised a little with some little arpeggiated and chordal bits that I hope enhance the mood of the piece while still honoring the beautiful melody.

All -

Connie posted this in her J, but I have added it here as well. This is the first time that Connie has played piano for us. Here, she offers a lovely cover performance of Ashitaka to San from the animated fantasy feature film Princess Mononoke.

Guys... who's in the mood for a bit of George Harrison?  :)

I have been working on this song forever, it seems, and find it very difficult... it's a busy piece, really.  But I thought I'd have a go and record what I have thus far, especially since Helen's been looking for this one for some time.  I have tried to do an appreciable job of it.  I'm trying, George... I swear!
